Abilene Restaurants With Food-Eating Challenges

The Wholly Grail
Facebook, Wholly Cow Burgers LLC

I went to The Flipping Egg one morning to have breakfast with my son, and noticed there was a framed picture on the wall of a customer holding an empty plate. After a little investigating, I found out this guy is the lone champion of ‘The 10 Pancake Challenge’. The breakfast diner has been offering a food-eating challenge for a while, yet that man stands as the lone conqueror. And they’re not the only Abilene restaurant to offer to put customers to the test.

Both of Heff’s Burgers locations (on South 1st and Rebecca Ln.) tease you with their ‘Triple Challenge’. This requires you to consume a triple meat burger, three large orders of fries and a 20 oz. drink of your choice in ten minutes. If you successfully complete the challenge, you get your oversized meal for free (it costs around $15.00) and your post-challenge photo displayed proudly on the wall of Heff’s.

At Wholly Cow Burgers, located at 829 N. Judge Ely Blvd, ‘The Wholly Grail’ is a somewhat taller order. Literally. In order to receive your meal for free, a commemorative t-shirt and your photo on the wall of the establishment, Wholly Cow requires that you finish their 8-patty burger, plus a large order of fries and a large shake in 30 minutes or less. The meal costs just a shade under $28.00 if you’re unable to handle the task. I’m told that around ninety people have gone head-to-head with the Wholly Grail, and only 4 have defeated it. So, the odds are stacked against you.

The Flipping Egg’s ’10 Pancake Challenge’ is pretty simple: eat 10 regular-sized pancakes in ten minutes. Time begins when you put the first bite in your mouth, and you have to have the last bite in your mouth by the time 10:00 expires. If you can do it, you’re meal (which costs around $10.00) is on the house, plus you get a victory t-shirt and your picture next to that one, lonely guy on the wall. Get there early, because the restaurant near the corner of Buffalo Gap Rd. and S. Danville closes at 2:00pm.

Now that the ground rules have been established. I plan to take on each of these food-eating challenges. How tough can it be, anyway? If John Candy can handle ‘The Old 96er’ in the movie ‘The Great Outdoors‘, I can handle a few pancakes and XXL hamburgers, right?

Win, lose or draw, I’ll be sure to share my results. Are there any other restaurants in the Abilene area that offer food-eating challenges? Have you ever taken a shot at one before?
