August is "National Water Quality Month" and City of Abilene officials have some tips to help ensure that the Key City always has a plentiful quality water source.

  • Cleaning up after our pets
  • Dispose all household chemicals, oils, antifreeze and more at the recycling center
  • Do not flush any medications down the toilet or drain
  • Keep storm drains free of debris so that only rain runs down the storm drain
  • Use a rain barrel to collect rainwater for gardening and landscaping
  • Adopt a creek or street to help pick up litter

I think everyone agrees that the single most important asset to Abilene and West Texas is our water supply. With that also comes the responsibility for all Big Country residents to ensure that we do our part to guarantee clean water.

When it rains, storm water runoff can have a significant impact on our water quality and supply. Here's what we can do to help the City of Abilene Stormwater Services and Keep Abilene Beautiful during "National Water Quality Month".

  • During the month of August Abilene Zoo visitors can take the 'Raindrop Tour' to learn more about water preservation at home.
  • Saturday, August 6th participate in the 'Lake Fort Phantom Clean Up'. The first 50 volunteers will get a free t-shirt commemorating the event. Meet at Fort Phantom's Johnson Park at 8 AM.
  • Friday, August 26th beginning at 8 AM get a free rain barrel from the Environmental Recycling Center 2209 Oak Street. Limit one per vehicle please.

For more information or  to volunteer call 325-676-6281 or visit the Abilene Stormwater Services website.
