Medical City Children’s Hospital Air Ambulance Begins Service to Abilene

Medical City’s air ambulance plane begins flying this week, with a stop in Abilene Wednesday at Abilene Aero, 2850 Airport Boulevard. The public is invited to come out from 1 – 6 p.m. Flight nurses will show the air ambulance to children, and give them toy glider planes. Admission is free.

The Advanced Maternal and Newborn Institute (AMNI) program, part of Medical City Children’s Hospital, is a comprehensive children’s hospital with specialists in virtually every pediatric subspecialty, including nationally recognized craniofacial, congenital heart defect, hematology, and oncology treatment programs.

“We really want pregnant women and their physicians to know the AMNI program and the plane are for them”, says Medical City Children’s Hospital’s Chris Hawes. “We accept all women and unborn babies who need us, regardless of income, location, and complexity.”

This is the only air ambulance plane in the state with a maternal transport team, meaning it can transport pregnant women in crisis. This allows a medically fragile infant to be born in the same hospital – Medical City – where he or she will be treated.

The air ambulance serves all of Texas, as well as surrounding states. Medical City offers an advanced adult hospital with a high-risk labor and delivery unit, as well as Medical City Children’s Hospital, which includes the highest level of NICU designated by the state of Texas. The air ambulance can also transport patients to seven of Medical City’s sister hospitals in North Texas.
