Al Pacino Returning to ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ For Broadway Revival

Glengarry Glen Ross
New Line Cinema

Al Pacino, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 1992′s ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ is returning for a new production of the classic David Mamet story, but this time in a completely different role.

Pacino starred in the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play (along with Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin and Ed Harris) and in that version he played the role of Ricky Roma, the hot-shot real estate agent working in the office.

But the New York Times reports that Pacino will star in a Broadway revival of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ as Shelly “The Machine” Levene, the film’s lead character (played by Lemmon in the film), a once-successful salesman desperate for a big deal. The two characters are the polar opposites in the script and it will be interesting to see how time allows Pacino to play both roles.

‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ first opened in 1984 and ran for 11 months in its first outing. It’s garnered acclaim for many years as both a stage play and a film (that speech Alec Baldwin gives in the film version is one of his most memorable career highlights, and was even referenced on ‘30 Rock‘), with the latest version — in 2005 — featuring Alan Alda in the Levene role and Liev Schreiber as Roma.

Pacino has won both an Emmy and an Oscar — if he wins a Tony for his performance as Levene in this revival, he’s just one album away from EGOT. And with that we’ve gotten in tw0 ’30 Rock’ references in one article. Is it fall yet?
