Ang Lee Gets Into the Ring with 3D Boxing Film

AP

Ang Lee, who won an Oscar earlier this year for ‘Life of Pi’ and is no stranger to stunning visual storytelling, is tackling an altogether different subject matter with his next project: a 3D boxing film that focuses on some of the greatest bouts of all time.

The untitled film is an unusual one, and it’s hard to get a grasp on just how it will work at this stage. But according to Deadline, the movie will have a narrative that connects the 3D depiction of some of boxing’s great fights from the 60s and 70s, including what might be the most famous of them all: Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila. It appears as though this is a drama, not a biopic, but again, it’s unknown what the connective thread will be.

Peter Morgan (‘The Queen’) is penning the screenplay, while Lee’s longtime collaborator James Schamus is producing. Universal Pictures is the studio behind the ambitious project, which seeks to up the ante in 3D filmmaking.

We suppose the idea is to make you feel as if you’re right there in the ring, getting battered by Joe Frazier? If so, the audience might need helmets!
