‘American Idol‘ first brought the idea of reality singing shows to its current fame on FOX. Then, NBC came back with their creative spin on the traditional show with ‘The Voice,’ which included coaches, mentors and teams rather than judges and contestants. And now, ABC is bringing a mentoring show of their own to this summer’s television lineup: ‘Duets,’ which premieres this May.
We’ve been reporting on all of the happenings surrounding Lionel Richie‘s country duets album ‘Tuskegee‘ since details of the collaborative effort first arose. The highly awaited 13-track collection of duets with Richie and some of the biggest names in country finally dropped March 26. This week, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. According to the Tennessean, the project sold 198,892 copies, which also landed Richie at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 trailing only Madonna.
For the better part of last week, the week leading up to the ACM Awards, country stars visited the ‘Today‘ show to try their hand at co-hosting the fourth hour with Hoda Kotb while Kathie Lee Gifford was away. Then, this week, Kotb had her chance to get away while Gifford found some co-hosts of her own. One guest who tried his hand as a co-host Wednesday and Thursday of this week (April 4 and 5) was Billy Ray Cyrus.
In 2000, young singer Billy Gilman exploded onto the music scene as a 12-year-old with a killer voice and the musical chops to take him places. He released a debut record called ‘One Voice,’ sold more than 2 million copies and then had to take a step back from the industry when puberty put a crimp in his vocal style. Now, almost 12 years later, Gilman has found his voice again, and he’s choosing to use it for the sake of others.
This week, country stars Justin Moore and Miranda Lambert tweeted their disapproval for Ashton Kutcher’s dress and performance at last weekend’s ACM Awards. And while Lambert primarily mentioned that she thought Kutcher may have been poking fun rather than coming at the country genre in sincerity, Moore was quite a bit more candid with his thoughts, ending with, “I don’t care for people making a mockery of the way country artists’ dress.”
Blake Shelton may have done some pretty significant Taylor Swiftteasing from the stage of the ACM Awards last Sunday (April 1), but the comedic star says that, even though the blonde starlet beat him out for Entertainer of the Year, he knows her prize was well deserved given all that she’s done in the past year.
We told you way back in January that young country crooner Scotty McCreery is scheduled to make an appearance on the CW’s show ‘Hart of Dixie’ later in April. And of course, he’ll be doing what he does best — crooning. Thanks to TV Guide, we now have more details about his guest-starring role. McCreery will serenade the characters George and Zoe (played by Scott Porter and Rachel Bilson, respectively) in the April 23 episode of the Southern-based comedic drama.
Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw have been seeing a good bit of each other lately, as the two polish their boots in preparation for their upcoming Brothers of the Sun Tour, which kicks off June 2 in Tampa, Fla. Plus, the pair of country studs hit the ACM stage this past weekend (Sunday, April 1) to perform their new joint single ‘Feel Like a Rock Star.’ And then today (April 4), the two took their rocking single to the stage of ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show.’
‘American Idol‘ has been featuring some of their successful alums in recent episodes, with names like Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina taking the stage as of late to show this season’s hopefuls just what a career in music can look like. Now, another ‘Idol’ country success story — Kellie Pickler — is gearing up to take the stage, and she announced the news over Twitter… but without giving everything away to her fans right away.
