It's been almost a year since Len Wiseman was announced as the director of the new version of 'The Mummy,' and there hasn't been much news about the project since. So it's no surprise that Wiseman is now off the project, and the producers are looking for another helmer.
Though we aren't yet into August, the summer movie season is winding down. '2 Guns' opens this Friday, and it stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, but it's hard to compare it to the big event films like 'Iron Man 3' or 'Man of Steel.' Maybe that's why there's a brand new trailer for the film to help get people excited for its release in four days.
Though we've seen a number of young-adult novels translated to the big screen only to flop ('Beautiful Creatures,' 'The Host') and may yet still (we're curious to see what happens with 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones'), it's still considered a hot genre for adaptations. So it's no surprise Disney wants to bring the YA hit 'Artemis Fowl' to the big screen. What is surprising is that it's being produced by Robert De Niro and Harvey Weinstein.
Vin Diesel has recently been teasing his involvement with an upcoming Marvel project, so we're a little surprised he also just signed on for the film 'World's Most Wanted.' It's an action adventure movie from the producer of the 'Fast and Furious' films.
It's hard to get up in arms about remakes, considering how many of them there are, but the period between originals and new versions is getting shorter and shorter. Case in point: 'The Butterfly Effect.' This 2004 film is the latest to get a remake -- though it's being called a reboot, partly because the original inspired two direct-to-video sequels.
Marvel has been quick to pick up release dates, as they currently have three films set for release on May 6, 2016, July 8, 2016, and May 5, 2017 and have yet to reveal what those films are (if they know, which they may not). At Comic-Con 2012, they unveiled their release slate into 2015, with 'Ant-Man' and 'Avengers 2' on the docket, while this year they didn't mention anything new as their big announcement was the title of the 'Avengers' sequel. It turns we won't know what those untitled films are until next year at the earliest.
Though 'Star Wars: Episode 7' may have sat out Comic-Con, now that it's a Disney product, it's possible we'll get the first big casting announcement this year at Disney's D23, which is coming in August. But news has broken that Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling are being talked about for the film, and that Gosling is up for the role of Luke Skywalker's son.
'The Trial of the Chicago 7' was one hot project in 2008, with Aaron Sorkin writing, Steven Spielberg directing, and Will Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen rumored to star as Bobby Seale and Abbie Hoffman, respectively. The project has been dormant for a while, but 'The Bourne Ultimatum' director Paul Greengrass might be the person to bring it back to life.
The Syfy channel wants to get in on the recent resurgence of 'The Wizard of Oz'-related material with their own revised and rebooted Oz. The plan is to move the story to a post-apocalyptic future, and have 'Abraham LIncoln: Vampire Hunter' director Timur Bekmambetov at the helm of their version, which is titled 'Warriors of Oz.'
Every year Marvel likes to do something big at Comic-Con to get audiences excited for what's coming next. Though we won't see the film until 2015, Marvel brought out Joss Whedon to announce the title of 'The Avengers 2.' It's 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron.'
