About a month and a half ago, I posted a blog about the Abilene city council considering some changes to the city ordinances that would have made owning a dog a bit more costly. In an effort to get a better perspective as to how the people of Abilene feel on these issues, Rescue the Animals, a non-profit proactive animal rights organization founded in Abilene, has just posted a survey on their website. Their intention is to deliver the results to the Mayor and the city council.

The D1 Sports Complex is due to open on June 4th, 2012.
We got a visit from the Spirit Airlines marketing department in Abilene on Thursday April 26th, their reason for being here was to say thanks to all Texans and to give-away 20,000 frequent flyer bonus mile vouchers. Each voucher is good for one free round trip airline ticket (not including airline fees and taxes) to approximately 20 cities where Spirit Airlines flies.
I couldn’t believe it either, my favorite sporting goods store in Abilene is closing it’s doors for good on May 14th, 2012. Store manager Ralph Zamarippa says “we’ve known for some time that Abilene was one of the stores that’s been on the list of stores closing in the Big 5 chain, but we couldn’t say anything”. The San Angelo store will be closing as well according to a visiting manager from the Lubbock store Roy Rocha.
I have practically raised my children around the radio station, my kids were in and out of radio station on a regular basis. So much so that when Angie is here, she is sharing her popcorn and other treats with everyone throughout the radio station. As the national day for ‘Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day‘ comes up on Thursday April 26th, she is asking if she can come to work with me. She finishes her sales pitch on me with “all my friends are going with their moms and dads”.
Beautiful butterflies are everywhere in Abilene and for the most part this year, we are seeing thousands of Red Admiral, Tawny Emperor and Orange-Barred Sulphur butterflies. If you’ve seen butterflies and want to identify them, do as I did, I turned to the internet.
Get ready for the sights and sounds of skydiving, jet engines, mock aerial dog fights and awesome aerobatics, all performed over the skies of Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. This year, the Big Country Air fest is scheduled for Saturday April 28th with the Tye gate opening to the public at 8am.
I drove by Abilene High School Saturday afternoon and saw what looked like a couple hundred people standing around a dozen new cars in the main parking lot while the bands percussion section was playing Caribbean music. I stopped and asked, I learned that Ford Motor Company, Arrow Ford and the bands booster club had teamed up together to raise money through Fords ‘Drive One 4UR School’ event.
I heard in church last Sunday that NFL quarterback Tim Tebows mom was coming to Abilene, and that she would be the featured speaker during the ‘Compassion In Action’ regional women’s conference on Saturday, April 28, at Beltway Bark Baptist Church. Pam Tebow has a very moving story to share and an even stronger commitment to her faith.
I remember it as if it was yesterday, the announcer saying “you’re listening to Armed Forces Radio Network and it’s time for the Dick Clark Radio Show”. It was the late 1963 to early 1965, I was living in Madrid Spain near Torrejon Air Force base listening to my dads transistor radio. It was shortly there after, that I decided I wanted to be on the radio, I wanted to be like that man on the radio named ‘Dick Clark’. He was cool, he knew all the stars and he knew all the songs that ever came out of that little three inch speaker. I just heard, on my little radio in my office that the guy I aspired to be like just died. Yes, the American Bandstand legend Dick Clark is gone.
The race for the Sheriffs office in Abilene is promising to be a heated race as the candidates pour their feelings and experience into their campaigns. Hardin Simmons University social work students will be holding an ‘Open Public Forum’ on campus April 24th. Their goal is to distinguish the clear differences between all three candidates. Guess who the HSU students have coming to the ‘Open Public Forum’?
