It’s now August and that means Back-to-School. Hard to believe it’s right around the corner but school will start in about 3 week; August 27th for both Abilene & Wylie ISD. Everyone will need school supplies but sometimes money can be tight and folks could use a little help. That’s where “stuff the bus” locations can provide some relief.
Gorillas are very much like humans, so much so that we share 97% of our DNA with them. They have emotions, actions and memories that rival anything we have. See what happens when these two gorilla brothers are reunited.
The Abilene Repertory Theatre Alumni in conjunction with Abilene Community Theatre present “Everyman”, a morality play, this Friday and Saturday evening. This is a fundraiser to help keep theatre alive in Abilene and also honor two members that passed away last year. This is a great show for church groups and tickets are going fast.
Dove season is just around the corner and while many people hunt, others do not. The RSVFD Dove Fest offers events for those of you who do not hunt. The annual dove fest is the primary fund raiser for the Rising Star Volunteer Fire Department.
“Ride for a Cure” benefit for the American Cancer Society is being organized by Heath Page for September 1st at Kent’s Harley Davidson. Heath’s sister, Jessie, was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer and has undergone chemo and radiation. Heath wanted to do something to help find a cure so others don’t have to face this. The proceeds (100%) from the ride will go to the ACS to provide services and support for cancer patients.
I watched a movie the other night that I had never heard of called “Mission to Mars” with Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins and Don Cheadle. Apparently this movie was released in 2000. It was interesting and somewhat farfetched, or so I thought at the time. It seems it is more realistic than I had imagined. I know we’ve already landed on Mars but this newest mission to the red planet is a little different in that “Curiosity” is a a robot chemist looking for signs of planet habitability.
One of my favorite reality shows, and I don’t like reality shows, is Dancing with the Stars. I think it is a well planned show. Sometimes I don’t agree with the judges decisions, but who does? I think it’s great entertainment and I love to watch stars that have never danced actually come in and surprise everyone. Well now that the show is entering it’s 800th season, it’s time for the “All-Stars” version complete with one fan voted extra.
It’s a phrase I’ve heard for years, my grandparents and parents said it and now I say it but what does the phrase “once in a blue moon” actually mean? I’ve always heard it used in reference to something that happens very rarely. For the most part that is true.
Abilene law enforcement and the community have always had a good relationship. The officers have trading cards to give to kids, they go to the schools, they have programs to teach bike and car safety and they always go above and beyond to help a great cause. This Thursday, July 26th law enforcement and Texas Roadhouse have teamed up to give you a great dining experience and raise money for the Special Olympics.
The 12th Armored Division were known as the “Hellcats” during WWII. They were one of the best fighting units of the war. August 1-5 that unit will be celebrated with a reunion and parade in downtown Abilene.
