It’s difficult to deny the country influences on the Avett Brothers’ new album ‘The Carpenter,’ which is available in stores and at digital retailers on Tuesday (Sept. 11). In a video exclusive to Taste of Country, the group discusses the banjo-laden cut ‘Down With the Shine,’ a song about avoiding the never-ending temptation of materialism.

“Dramatically it’s about being tempted by fools gold,” Scott Avett says in the clip (view below). He discusses the writing of the song between clips of the track from the alt-country-rock band’s seventh studio album.

“In its first form it was a pretty vulgar song,” he says, with brother Seth to his left. “Just because it came from a place of conviction and somewhat of a frustration and anger at times. Much like speaking before listening, it was kind of like writing before thinking.”

Check back to Taste of Country later this week for a full interview and album review of the Avett Brothers’ ‘The Carpenter.’
