Sugar cookie are a holiday staple, yet I had never made them. You see commercials of kids, moms and grandparents all in the kitchen decorating cookies for Santa. I just always put out Chips Ahoy or Oreos (that's what I heard he liked) but this year I decided to give homemade sugar cookies a whirl. They turned out pretty good, If I do say so myself. It was the icing that made them though, so here is the recipe I used. I found it in my moms recipe box.

Ingredients:

  • 2 c. powdered sugar
  • 1 Table spoon + 1 teaspoon milk
  • 1 Table spoon + 1 teaspoon light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • food coloring (gel) of your choice

Mix together all ingredients and separate into bowls for each color needed. Add your food coloring of choice to each bowl and mix. Remember to use gel food colorings so you don't thin the consistency of the icing.

Apply your icing with a decorators bag and tip, spoon, our as I did, with a small spatula.

Add other embellishments. Sprinkles, decorator candies, etc. In my case I just added some green to make the stems.

Let your cookies dry. They should stay fairly shiny, that's the corn syrup working, and eat or store in cool, dry container for later eating!
