Shay's Thoughts on Preventive Mastectomies

The public was shocked yesterday when it was revealed that Angelina Jolie had undergone a preventive double or bi-lateral mastectomy, only she hadn't been diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a preventive measure as tests showed she had an 87% chance of getting cancer in the future. I'm not sure if people were more shocked at what she had done or the fact that it had been kept secret for so long. Either way it was water cooler talk for the day.

Most of you know that I was diagnosed with breast cancer just one year ago. I went in for my first ever mammogram at the age of 40, that led to a sonogram, another mammogram and finally a biopsy that determined the lump in my left breast was cancerous. Maybe if I had had this app and video I would have gotten my mammogram earlier.

Relay For Life events tend to be more of a celebration and opportunity to hang out with friends than a fundraiser. The Relay For Life of Shackelford County Shamrock Shuffle 5K is no exception. It's breast cancer awareness month and I have been amazed at how many people are affected by this disease. As someone who has gone through it myself I know what it's like to lose my hair due to chemo. For me, it wasn't that big a deal but for kids it's even harder.
