Trinity Baptist Church youth Pastor Joseph Plagge says they’re planning one last bash before school starts. The event is will take place at Trinity Baptist Church located at 871 Woodlawn Drive. It is free and open to children ages 3 years old thru 5th grade. Plagge says “this will also be a perfect opportunity to introduce neighborhood children to AWANA.”
Abilene’s Global Samaritan Resources (G.S.R.) Benefit Dinner is an annual event that’s featured some well known speakers in the past, like former Governor Mike Huckabee, comedian Henry Cho, A.C.U. President Royce Money and this year the G.S.R. is bringing in former First Lady Laura Bush. But before you rush out to buy your tickets, there’s a couple things to consider.
While summer continues to heat up, so will the Abilene Civic Center, when the 2012 West-Texas Bridal Showcase comes to Abilene. With over 50 exhibitors, vendors and/or services on hand for this years showcase, you’ll want to listen for your chance to tickets to the showcase.
Art-Walk enters into uncharted territory on September 13th, when the Center for Contemporary Arts (a non-profit themselves) raises money and awareness for another non-profit, the Abilene Alzheimer’s Association. Among the usual art displays, activities, sights and events that take place during Art-Walk, on September 13th Art-Walk will seem more like “Carnival” in Rio de Janeiro. Music, fun and games will fill the air and the streets of downtown Abilene. Plus live entertainment from a very popular local band.
The first annual Cross Plains Classic 5k is set for September 15th. This event is a run or walk and there will also be a 1-mile walk option. All proceeds benefit the local Cross Plains Community Cancer Fund. If you per-register before September 1st, you’ll receive a T-shirt commemorating the event. There’s also a “Sleep-in” option. The 2012 West Texas Fair and Rodeo begins Thursday, September 6th, with the traditional Sneak-a-Peak night and will run through Saturday, September 15th. This year fair goers can purchase a ‘Seasons Pass’ that’s good for the duration of the Fair and Rodeo. Some crowd favorites are back this year, like the Tractor Pull competition, the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack show and of course all the entertainers on the Outdoor stage.
The Big Country Wheat Conference will be held August 23rd at the Taylor County fair grounds, 1982 Lytle Way in Abilene. The Farm Bill will affect most all West Texans, as most farmers and ranchers try to figure out the challenges the new ‘Farm Bill’ will bring. The drought conditions are also top-of-mind for most area farmers And ranchers. If you’d like to attend the event, there is no registration fee for those who preregister by August 17th.

The Cross Plains public library was one of 78 libraries in America, chosen to participate in the ‘Big Read’ program. The library is set to receive an endowment for the arts. The ‘Big Read’ is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore and promote reading in America.
Saturday is the National Day of the American Cowboy (NDAC) and will be celebrated all over the Lone Star State. The closest place to Abilene holding a big celebration is the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. Most all activities associated with the NDAC at the Fort Worth Stockyards will be free, with only a few exceptions.
