New Year's Eve is just around the corner, and, regardless of whether you are looking for a party, a kid friendly event, or something the whole family can enjoy, here are some events to have a little New Year's Eve fun in Abilene.
The May Rodeo Association's (MRA) 3rd Annual New Year's Eve dance is scheduled for December 31st, featuring the James Lann Band. This event is very important to the association because they've recently torn down their old arena and will begin working on building a new one very soon. Money from this fundraising event will be used to help build the new arena. Any additional donations are greatly appreciated by the association.
If it's lots of music you're looking for in a New Year's Eve bash then point your boots toward Billy Bob's at the infamous Ft. Worth Stock Yards. Casey Donahew and JB and the Moonshine Band both will fill the the bill on Monday, December 31st as JB and his group of troubadours will open for Casey Donahew. Get your tickets while you can because if it's like last year, it will be a sell out.
Yesterday's 12-12-12 benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy relief raised over $30 million dollars, but it wasn't all good. We're still cringing for Bobby Moynihan's awkward appearance as his 'SNL' character "Drunk Uncle," for example.
Adam Sandler became the one millionth person to cover Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' last night at the 12/12/12 concert benefiting Hurricane Sandy relief. Only his version was chock-full of racy New York City-specific jokes.
This is the Abilene Community Band at their July Fourth Concert
The Abilene Community Band is holding their annual Christmas Concert December Thursday 20th at the Paramount Theater. This years Christmas concert theme is 'The Bells of Christmas' featuring the Abilene Gold Hand-bell Choir, made up of students from both Abilene and Cooper High Schools.
It's been a year since the last Hospice Radiothon and the Holiday time of year is when most families in the Big Country rely on the services of Hospice professionals. It's a known fact that Hospice is in higher demand during the winter Holidays. So therefore it is important for us to do all we can to raise money and awareness of our own Hendrick Hospice Care and the Radiothon. It's scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 13th and Friday, Dec. 14th 2012 from 6 AM till 6 PM.
If it doesn't snow for Christmas in West Texas this year, at least plan to celebrate a White Mountain Christmas with the Flying J Wranglers on Sunday, December 9th. This show guarantees the break the Scrooge in anyone because it's a fun family show at the historic Paramount Theater. The show will begin at 7:30 PM with lots of traditional cowboy Christmas songs and your old time favorites.
The Texans, a Christian singing group is scheduled to appear at the Elmwood Baptist Church on the corner of South 14th and Barrow Street. The group will perform on Sunday, December 16th at 6 PM. This will be a family event as this is a free Christian Christmas Concert. The Texans began their musical career at Dallas Christian College in 1971. Today the perform mainly in Branson Missouri since their first show there in 1983 but were known to take to the road and tour, as is the case here in Abilene.
The 43rd annual West Texas REHAB Telethon is scheduled for January 19, 2013 at the Abilene Civic Center. This years 'featured' entertainers were announced at there annual press conference at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center (WTRC) Dec. 3rd. This year the 'Headline Entertainment' responsibility will be shared by Jana Kramer and hometown legend Aaron Watson. While Aaron Watson did make a live appearance at the press conference, Charlie Chase (the telethon's host) appeared via video-Skype from Nashville, TN.
The Little Masterpieces Art Show is back this year as the Artist members of The Center for Contemporary Arts (TCCA) have created their 'Little Masterpieces' to fill your Christmas stockings. These little works of art make great gifts and all the art is affordable with some pieces starting at only $35. This fundraiser for The Center is scheduled for December 7th, with the reception starting at 5:30 PM.
Just in time for Christmas the Silver Spur Gun and Blade Show is coming back to the Taylor County Expo Center Saturday and Sunday, December 1st and 2nd. What I really like about this show is all the gun and knife stuff you normally find at a typical show of this kind. However, the silver Spur folks also invite some other vendors to set up as well, like handmade arts, crafts and jewelry. This way I can take my wife to the show as well.
