One country legend will replace another as the Charlie Daniels Band takes a turn at opening up ‘Monday Night Football’ on ESPN next week. Daniels has reworked ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ for the broadcast’s opening theme. It appears to be a one game only engagement.

On Monday (Sept. 17), the Denver Broncos will battle the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta, Ga. The new version of ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ will highlight the quarterback matchup between Peyton Manning and the Falcons’ Matt Ryan. Does that make Manning the devil?

“I’ve been watching ‘Monday Night Football’ since it started and to be a part of it kind of makes me feel proud,” Daniels said in a statement at ESPN.com. “I had to watch the lyrics real close because I’ve done those same ‘Devil Went Down To Georgia’ lyrics for 33 years.”

‘Monday Night Football’ producer Jay Rothman quickly shoots down any idea that the band will return for week three of the NFL season. “This is one of the fun things about having a new themed open each week,” he says. “It gives us a blank canvas to be creative and incorporate athletes, celebrities, musicians and others depending on the storylines of the game. We hope fans like it.”

Last October, Hank Williams, Jr. and ESPN parted ways after nearly 20 years of the legend recording the weekly opening with a version of ‘All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.’
