James Holmes, the 24-year-old former graduate student suspected of opening fire at a Colorado movie theater’s midnight showing of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ early Friday, is due in court Monday for an initial advisement. Although, The Denver Post reports it could possibly take months until he’s tried for the shooting of approximately 71 people, 12 of whom were killed. Until then, he remains on suicide watch in solitary confinement.

According to a recently released inmate, “he was spitting at the door and spitting at the guards” when he was initially brought in. Inmate Dima Danilov remarked that “he won’t live to see Monday’s court appearance” if he is to be placed with the general jail population, referencing taunts Holmes received from the other inmates. As a precautionary measure, guards placed duct tape across the window of his holding cell.

After police took Holmes into custody, authorities proceeded to his apartment, which was said to be lined with explosives. Bomb technicians were called in and confirmed the presence of “softball-sized improvised explosive devices” and a “9D trip device.” It wasn’t until Saturday afternoon, however, that these threats were finally neutralized in an open field east of Aurora, Colorado.

Holmes is now facing, at the very least, 71 charges for each of his victims, though District Attorney Carol Chambers will most likely be adding more.
