Back in 2009, director Tim Smit released What’s in the Box?, a first-person short film about a mysterious government quarantine. The film was an instant hit with audiences, especially those looking to form connections between the short and established franchises such as Half-Life or Lost; Entertainment Weekly even ran an entire feature breaking down the connections between Smit’s film and Damon Lindelof’s series. And while nothing much came of those rumors  —  hey, sometimes a cool video short is just a cool video short  —  What’s in the Box? has been given its own big-screen adaptation set for release the summer.

The first trailer for Kill Switch (via /Film), Smit’s feature film debut, offers just as much clarity as his short, but there are two reasons that fans should be excited. First, like the short, Kill Switch appears to be shot in first-person, an approach that promises much but has yet to deliver in any meaningful way (yes, I paid to see Hardcore Henry in theaters, please don’t @ me). Eventually Hollywood will find a way to package a first-person narrative as a feature film, and while Kill Switch may not be the movie that finds the winning formula, I’m always curious to see what filmmakers will think of next.

And second, the film features Dan Stevens, one of the internet’s current boyfriends  —  I forget who all is in the running right now  —  and all-around action star. Those who have seen Stevens in either The Guest or Legion know that there’s quite a bit of punch packed into his dashing frame, so seeing Stevens take on one last genre romp before he gets called up to the ranks of prestige actors or franchise mega-stars should be fun for everyone involved. If Stevens is cast as, say, the next James Bond, these are exactly the type of movies he won’t be making anymore, so sign me up for more action movie trash.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for Kill Switch:

A military experiment to harness unlimited energy goes horribly awry, leaving a pilot with no choice but to fight through an imploding world to save his family and the planet itself.

In addition to Stevens, Kill Switch will star Charity Wakefield, Bérénice Marlohe, and Tygo Gernandt. The film will hit theaters on June 16, 2017.
