Sunday’s Game of Thrones left plenty to talk about, whether Jon and Sansa’s reunion or Dany’s latest nude firewalk, but updates from the world of Westeros pale in comparison to the real story six seasons in the making: Tormund Giantsbane and Brienne of Tarth. The greatest Game of Thrones couple in living history only had a moment to share their love, but “Book of the Stranger” director Daniel Sackheim is hopeful their wildfire keeps burning.

Speaking with TVGuide, Sackheim curiously noted his uncertainty that the gag would register with viewers (come on, buddy, that was the biggest fire the north has ever seen), saying “It was like a fun little bit, but I wasn’t sure it was really clear that he had these amorous feelings for Brienne.”

Granted, neither Brienne nor Tormund are likely to stay together at Castle Black for very long, what with the former headed to Riverrun and the latter in a spot of battlefield peril by initial trailers, but Sackheim offered at least some hope for the smoldering couple:

I think it was fairly one-sided, but that’s OK. There’s nothing like a challenge. Men love a challenge.

Hopefully, this coming Sunday’s “The Door” will catch up up on #Torienne (or #Tarthbane, #TarthmundGiantsbri, #Briemund, whatever you like), but might the fan-favorite couple end up relegated to a one-off gag, like poor Ser Pounce?
