Joe Diffie, Jim Lauderdale, Jeanne Pruett and Hank Williams’ daughter Jett Williams were among those in attendance as George Jones‘ burial monument was unveiled Monday (11/18) in Nashville. This comes nearly 7 months after his passing in April. The shrine, done on a grand scale, is befitting the life of the country music icon.

The unveiling served as a kick off to the week dedicated to Jones in Nashville, as hundreds of musicians will be on hand for the George Jones tribute concert on Friday.

The towering monument is complete with the words “He Stopped Loving Her Today” stretching across the top, an engraved guitar and an arched “Jones” overlooking it all. There is also a photo of George and wife Nancy engraved between two pillars resembling guitar necks. This may be considered over-the-top for most, but for ‘The Possum’, it makes perfect sense.

The equally impressive grave marker features a montage of George Jones images spanning his decades of performing, as well as Jones’ autograph. The foot of the stone simply states “George Jones”, and “The Possum” underneath in all caps.

During the ceremony unveiling the burial monument, it was announced that a new scholarship at Middle Tennessee State University in honor of George was established. According to Country Weekly, Nancy Jones said:

“George would have liked the fact that MTSU attracts so many first-generation college students, as well as students who face financial challenges. Like George, they are hardworking folks who are determined to make their dreams a reality.”
