The parents of 5-year-old Scotty Meyer, who suffers from autism, were fear stricken when they realized their son had disappeared. The family officially reported him missing midday last Tuesday, convinced that he had slipped out of the house while their air conditioning was being repaired. Fortunately, he was found the next morning thanks to the help of one furry little guy on four legs — an 8-year-old Golden Retriever named Autumn.

Upwards of 500 volunteers came out to help search for Scotty, but at first, the pup wasn’t one of them. Owner Melissa Moser was a bit hesitant to let him join, but after talking it over with her husband Jason she finally gave the OK. “We have a 4 1/2-year-old, and we can’t imagine losing him,” said Jason.

It was a good thing she did. After authorities spent all of Tuesday night using thermal imaging equipment with no success, it was ultimately Autumn’s keen senses that led them to Scotty early Wednesday morning under the shade of an evergreen tree.

Though Scotty was found dehydrated, sunburned and covered in bug bites, no long-term injuries were sustained and he’s expected to make a full recovery.

“We all felt like it was a movie or something. It didn’t seem like it could be happening,” said Scotty’s aunt Rose Poss, who had the worst time getting to sleep Tuesday night. “The outpouring of people was incredible. And Jason and Melissa Moser and their dog Autumn, we love them. They are wonderful.”
