Recently we reported that James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' was testing five actors for the lead. Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne were all up for the role of Peter Quill, a half-human, half-alien who brings the Guardians together. It now looks like the race is down to two people: Jim Sturgess and new contender Zachary Levi.

This comes from Variety, and they note that while Levi wasn't originally in contention, but that Marvel is happy with Levi's work in 'Thor: The Dark World' as he replaced Joshua Dallas as Fandral, one of the Warriors Three. The question is if Marvel wants to double dip the actor, as he would be playing different roles in Marvel franchises.

The precedent would be Chris Evans, who first appeared as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in 'Fantastic Four' and is now Steve Rogers/Captain America in the 'Captain America' films. But the big difference is that the 'Fantastic Four' movies were done with by the time Evans signed on for Cap, while it's possible that Frandal will continue on in future 'Thor' adventures.

Which makes it seem like Jim Sturgess will get the part unless they really, really want Levi. Then again, the article also mentions a mystery third candidate who may test shortly. 'Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to be releases August 1, 2014.
