HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' season 4 premiere "New York Sour" may have been the toast of the premium cable network on Sunday night, but among all the popping corks, the first trailer for the 2014 Woody Harrelson-Matthew McConaughey dark crime thriller 'True Detective' emerged from the depths. Are you ready for a first look at the gritty new A-lister drama?

Starring McConaughey and Harrelson in a season directed by Cary Fukunaga ('Jane Eyre,' 'Sin Nombre'), ‘True Detective’ follows investigators Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a 17-year hunt for a Louisiana serial killer. Their investigation of a gruesome 1995 murder cuts through testimony from the detectives in 2012, after the case re-opens.

The full trailer above doesn't offer much in the way of specific story, though clearly highlights some impressively unique imagery as the investigation takes both McConaughey and Harrelson through dark depths over multiple years. "Someone once told me that all your love, all your hate, it's all the same thing, it's all a dream," McConaughey's character laments in 2012. "And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it."

Somewhat reminiscent of 'American Horror Story,' each new season of the drama will focus on new characters and a new central mystery, though likely with an all-new cast rather than return McConaughey or Harrelson in new roles. You can check out the first trailer for 'True Detective' above, and tell us in the comments if you'll tune in for the January 2014 premiere!
