According to a new survey from Gallup, 66 percent of adults drink alcohol, up from 64 percent last year.

But are these Americans who imbibe enjoying the occasional glass of wine or are they pounding beer after beer?

The poll of 1,014 people found that the average number of beverages someone who drinks consumed in the past week is 4.2. To break that down further, 34 percent of drinkers hadn’t had any alcohol in the past week, 52 percent had between one and seven drinks and 12 percent had eight or more servings of alcohol in the past week.

Men drink a lot more than women — 6.2 drinks a week as opposed to 2.2. Younger people and white people also drink more than older folks and non-whites.
