Jenny Beth Willis Sings Trisha Yearwood’s ‘Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love’ on ‘American Idol’
17-year-old country singer Jenny Beth Willis sang the Trisha Yearwood song ‘Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love’ on ‘American Idol‘ Wednesday night (Feb. 20), delivering a somewhat spotty performance that didn’t really do her voice justice.
The song wasn’t a great choice for the Kentucky-born singer, who performs at church and at bluegrass festivals in her home state. She sang it in an unflattering key that made the lower parts in the verses too low for her, forcing her to strain too hard and resulting in her voice sounding weak in the verses. The choruses were better, showing off her range, but the climactic high note at the end of the song seemed forced, instead of flowing naturally from the rest of the performance.
Keith Urban expressed mixed feelings about the performance, but added, “I love this effortless confidence that you perform with.”
Nicki Minaj took issue with Willis’ stage presence, saying, “I think you could have had so much more fun,” while Randy Jackson said her performance never really got in sync with the band. “The end note was great,” he said. “I wish the rest of it was that good.”
Willis was among the singers who were cut during the sudden death elimination.
