Kalie Shorr’s Older Sister Dies After Addiction Battle

Kalie Shorr's older sister, Ashley Coffman, has died at the age of 37 after a heroin overdose. Shorr announced the news over social media over the weekend of Jan. 5-6, also sharing a bit of her sister's story and her memory of the last conversation the two had with each other.

"It's so hard when you love someone and they are battling addiction because they lose so much of themselves in the process, but I am so thankful for the last conversation I had with her," Shorr stated in an Instagram post. "I really got to tell her how much I loved her and the last words she ever said to me were 'I am so proud of you.' I'll never forget that and that's how I will always remember her."

According to Taste of Country, Coffman had been fighting addiction for 10 years and left behind two children, nine-year-old Chloe and four-year-old Cameron.

In her post, Shorr also included a video of herself performing Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" in honor of her sister. Coffman's middle name was Rhiannon, after the song, "which is based on the old Welsh story of a beautiful goddess named Rhiannon who was captivating, beautiful and magical," Shorr goes on to say. "Ashley made friends faster than anyone I've ever met and could find something in common with you in five seconds flat."

On Twitter, after announcing her sister's death, Shorr entreated her fans to empathize with those struggling with addiction. "Please hug your loved ones and be patient with people who are fighting their demons. Anger never helps but love does," she wrote on Jan. 5.

After an outpouring of support from her fans and community, including many who shared stories of their own loved ones' battles with addiction, Shorr added that she was grateful for all the responses and well wishes. "You guys have been so amazing. Thank you for your kind words," she said. "And to those of you who have gone through similar experiences -- thank you for sharing that with me. I am grieving but I don't feel alone."

Shorr shared phone and web information for the National Drug Helpline, which offers round-the-clock help to those looking for information regarding treatment and recovery from drug addiction. The phone number is 1-888-633-3239.

Additionally, Shorr also created a GoFundMe page in small part to help with funeral expenses, but mostly to provide for Chloe and Cameron, who have been taken in by "close family who love them infinitely but were not financially prepared to raise two young children," according to the page.
