One of the best lyrics of the 21st century actually came away from awards season with nothing but a handful of nominations. Kenny Chesney's version of "You and Tequila" is pure country poetry. Grace Potter is his muse, and together, their mix is truly intoxicating.

The fourth single from Chesney's Hemingway's Whiskey album was a big commercial hit, going platinum on its way to a Top 5 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. There are several songs on this Top Country Songs of the Century list that are celebrated by the songwriting community more than the average fan. "You and Tequila" is one — an artist's song before it became a unexpected fan-favorite during live shows. For Chesney it recalled his Be as You Are album and opened doors for him to release "Come Over" and "El Cerrito Place" later.

The conversation about this song during Taste of Country's road to decide the best songs of the modern era was quick. It's the second of two Chesney song on this list. "There Goes My Life" was revealed as song No. 30.

About this list: Taste of Country’s Top Country Songs of the Century were decided by a panel of country music experts and fans using sales and chart data, a song’s social and musical impact and lyrical integrity. Select artists were also surveyed. You’ll hear from several throughout the list.
