The typically electric Las Vegas strip went dark for 11 minutes yesterday (October 8), one week after a terrorist shot and killed nearly 60 concert-goers at the three-day Route 91 Harvest Festival and injured more than 500 additional attendees.

The official Las Vegas Twitter account posted an image yesterday that found the Mandalay Bay and adjacent properties shrouded in darkness.

“In a show of unity the marquees of the Las Vegas Strip will go dark…in tribute to the victims and their families. #VegasStrong,” the account wrote.

Locals and tourists, alike, saw as a beautiful gesture.

“I think it’s a cool unification symbol,” visitor Michael Maiolo told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We’re going to stop in this incredibly busy city where seemingly nothing stops.”

The tribute began at 10 PM, and most properties nearby joined in on the effort.

“When Things Get Dark, Las Vegas Shines,” a statement read on the Mandalay Bay Resort, where it stayed until this morning (October 9).
