Lauren Alaina Newest Ambassador for Special Olympics Project UNIFY

Lauren Alaina became a household name as the runner-up of ‘American Idol‘ Season 10. And now the country singer is using that name to give back and to advocate for a cause for which she cares deeply: the Special Olympics. Recently named a Special Olympics Project UNIFY Ambassador for North America, Alaina was introduced by Special Olympics Minnesota athlete and National Youth Activation Committee member Danielle Liebl at the 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference, sponsored by the Special Olympics.

As an ambassador, Alaina will help advocate Project UNIFY, an initiative that unites youth with and without intellectual disabilities through sports, education and related activities. More specifically, the ‘Georgia Peaches’ singer will help raise awareness and change people’s attitudes toward people with intellectual disabilities by working to influence young Americans to be more inclusive.

“I am honored to be asked to be an Ambassador for Special Olympics,” Alaina said in a public statement. “I have been involved with the local chapter in my hometown since I was in 6th grade. There is nothing that makes me happier or inspires me more than spending time with the athletes. I have made friends for life and they did their part to support me throughout my run on ‘American Idol.’ Now, it is my turn to support them and help bring awareness to this wonderful organization.”

Alaina recently sang ‘Georgia Peaches’ on the ‘Today’ Show with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford in honor of ACM Week. She’s also set to make a cameo on the next Aerosmith record, singing alongside current ‘Idol’ judge Steven Tyler.
