‘Lore’ Looking at ‘Men in Black III’ Director Barry Sonnenfeld to Lead The Rock

Sony/Warner Bros.

Based on its fantastical premise, ‘Lore‘ was already sounding like the next ‘Men in Black.’ Now, with this latest development on the film, it’s almost officially the next ‘Men in Black.’ ‘MIB’ helmer Barry Sonnenfeld is in talks to direct Warner Bros.’ movie adaptation of the IDW comic, which has already lined up Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to star.

According to Deadline, this was a hot job, with Warner Bros. meeting with several directors lately (all unnamed). Sonnenfeld, whose three ‘Men in Black’ films have grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide at the box office, seems like a natural fit for the material, which introduces mythical monsters into our world.

This may have been the project Sonnenfeld was talking about back in May when he said he was talking to “Warner Bros. about doing a franchise based on a comic that hasn’t been around since the ’60s.”

Here’s the synopsis for the comic:

In times past, the world was full of mythical creatures, creatures long since banished and held at bay by the secret society of Shepherds. But when the generational line of Shepherds is broken, a reluctant hero finds her life threatened from every quarter. And the creatures are coming back… will the Earth be ready for their return?

Let’s assume the answer to that question is a resounding, “uh, no.”

You’ll note that the hero is a woman in the comic (“her life threatened…”) but Warner Bros. is going with  Johnson to play the lead in their movie version. With him and Sonnenfeld in the mix (if the director does indeed sign on), it will make ‘Lore’ quite the formidable behemoth.
