Even with the many buzz-worthy TV premieres and events that await in 2013, perhaps none are so hotly-anticipated as ABC and Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series, currently shooting its pilot episode. Apart from its cast, precious few details surrounding the show are available, but is ABC's fast-tracking of the pilot a good sign of it being picked up? And what demographic is the network hoping the show appeals to?

Though ABC assuredly won't reveal much, one of the hot-button topics the network finds itself discussing at the ongoing Television Critics Association press tour is none other than Marvel's Joss Whedon-helmed 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series, a new hour-long series tying into the cinematic Marvel universe of 'The Avengers.'

With the pilot currently shooting, ABC president Paul Lee revealed that the network hoped to have the pilot fast-tracked for review, even with general expectation 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' will be picked up to series. “We fast-tracked that before the others and we’re going to see it a lot earlier than the others," said Lee. "We’re very hopeful that that’s going to move forward to series and we’ll build our marketing campaign early for it."

Lee also explained that much of ABC's business model for new series comes down to "co-viewing," the idea that both generations of parents and kids will sit down to watch the show together. Lee accordingly praised the script for Whedon's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' pilot, saying:

Absolutely Marvel has the ability to bring the whole family around it. The truth about Joss is he has some great relationships in [S.H.I.E.L.D.] so there are a lot of really funny, male/female relationships, very flirtatious ones that go through it. But it’s also Joss too and it’s Marvel and there’s a lot of action to it.

We haven't yet seen the pilot...but we do see that as the possibility of a show that we can bring both men and women and kids to. The script’s great. So I don’t want to jinx it, because that may not mean a good pilot or a good series, but we’re very excited about it.

Currently shooting for a likely fall premiere, Marvel’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV series features a cast that also includes Clark Gregg’s resurrected Agent Phil Coulson, as well as ‘ER’ vet Ming-Na, Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker as the other agents of the team. Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson also recently stated that he expected to be involved in some small capacity.

What say you? Are you confident ABC will pick up the SHIELD TV series for a full season? Will the show have more of a family-friendly feel than 'The Avengers?' Tell us what you want to see in the comments!
