Remember Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch With His Best Pop Culture Moments
Ed Koch, who was mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989, died today from congestive heart failure. He was 88 years old. Older New York residents might remember him as the mayor whose terms were plagued by the crack and AIDS epidemics of the ’80s, as well as police brutality and corruption. Younger people probably remember him from being in ‘The Muppets Take Manhattan’ and for doing lots and lots of movie reviews. Here are some of his more fun/less scandalous moments.
‘The People’s Court’
Koch was the judge on ‘The People’s Court’ from 1995-1997.
Koch played a politician whose Thanksgiving dinner rivaled the mayor’s. You can see the whole episode here.
With Michael Jackson
Not only is he meeting Michael Jackson, he’s doing it on the subway. Has Bloomberg ever even been on the subway? Also there are balloons.
Yes, that is comic-Ed Koch talking to the Avengers.
With the Muppets
Koch also had a cameo in ‘Muppets Take Manhattan.’
Here’s a cartoon version of Ed Koch as the bad guy in a fictional ‘Ghost Chasers 3′ movie written by Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz).
‘The Mayor at the Movies’
Koch also reviewed movies and put his reviews up on a website called ‘Mayor at the Movies.’ Here’s his review of ‘Drive.’
‘Saturday Night Live’
Ed Koch was also the first NYC mayor to host ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Here’s his opening monologue.
