NASCAR – Matt Kenseth Wins at Talladega After Massive Last Lap Crash [VIDEO]
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rolled into Alabama for the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 at Talladega Superspeedway over the weekend, and one driver literally rolled his car several times on a last lap crash that took out most of the field.
Matt Kenseth won, but his win was overshadowed by the way the race ended - a massive car pileup caused by Tony Stewart. It took 3 hours to have the 'Big One' (a term used to describe the inevitable big wreck that happens in restrictor plate racing) but, when it happened, it took out most of the field.
With one lap remaining, Tony Stewart was leading the race when they hit the last turn. Michael Waltrip was being pushed by Casey Mears and had a good run to overtake Stewart, but 'ol 'Smoke' tried to block and ended up hitting the right front of Waltrip's number 55 machine, and the wreck was on. Tony Stewart actually ended up in the air and rolled several times over other cars.
Somehow, Matt Kenseth avoided the wreck and took the checkered flag for the win. Jeff Gordon finished 2nd, while Kyle Busch, David Regan , and Regan Smith rounded out the top 5.
Check out the video of the last lap melee, as well as pictures of the race below.
The wreck actually happens at the 1:28 mark.
Last Two Laps at Talladega
In my opinion, they need to shorten the race to like 20 laps or something, because nothing really happens until the last 10 laps of a race. Nevertheless, the last couple of laps were as intense as you can get. Here is a recap of the race in pictures which includes several shots of the huge last lap wreck.
