Things are about to get real on the new season of Nashville

In an intense new trailer released on Friday (Dec. 16), fans get a glimpse into the shocking plot lines that await during Season 5. The trailer opens with a fiery scene from Juliette Barnes' (Hayden Panettiere) plane crash, with a shot of the character's face covered in blood as she lies on the ground among the wreckage. Her plane accident has resulted in a spinal cord injury that leaves her paralyzed from the waist down, unsure if she'll be able to regain feeling in both legs.

"It could be months before you feel anything," the doctor tells her.

"Or never," she replies somberly.

Also in Season 5, Will Lexington (Chris Carmack) takes the next step with boyfriend Kevin Bicks by suggesting the two should move in together — but there may be trouble in paradise when another man moves in on the country star.

Rayna James (Connie Britton) is dealing with her own struggles, telling Charles Esten's Deacon Claybourne that she wants to write their story, saying, "I have lost touch with the things that I love … If I don't take this risk, I don't want to be an artist anymore." She also receives a mysterious letter from an unknown source, which may be from the crazed man who appears at the Highway 65 offices later in the trailer.

Scarlett O'Connor (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar Scott (Sam Palladio) are taking their own music career to the next level with a sultry music video shoot, which makes Scarlett uncomfortable. "Why would you push me to be something I'm not? she asks Gunnar frustrated.

Meanwhile, Maddie Conrad (Lennon Stella) is continuing to fight for her independence as she pushes away younger sister Daphne (Maisy Stella) and gains a new love interest that's bound to get complicated as he tells her he's "not a normal person."

Nashville's two-hour premiere debuts on Thursday (Jan. 5) at 9PM ET on CMT. Fans got a taste of the new season when the network released a one-hour sneak peak of the first episode on Thursday (Dec. 15).
