New Movie Releases: July 2016

The summer movie season continues next month with new Ghostbusters, a big friendly giant, another Purge night and Star Trek Beyond, and that’s not even half of it. Those of you interested in something a little less blockbuster-y should definitely add Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice to your must-see list, along with the James Wan-produced horror flick Lights Out. July 1

The BFG: Directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall and Bill Hader. A girl named Sophie encounters the Big Friendly Giant who, despite his intimidating appearance, turns out to be a kindhearted soul who is considered an outcast by the other giants because, unlike them, he refuses to eat children.

The Purge: Election Year: Directed by James DeMonaco. Starring Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell and Mykelti Williamson. Two years after choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Barnes has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.

The Legend of Tarzan: Directed by David Yates. Starring Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie and Samuel L. Jackson. Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.

Equals (Limited): Directed by Drake Doremus. Starring Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult and Vernetta Lopez. In an emotionless utopia, two people fall in love when they regain their feelings from a mysterious disease, causing tensions between them and their society.

Our Kind of Traitor (Limited): Directed by Susanna White. Starring Ewan McGregor, Damian Lewis and Stellan Skarsgard. A couple find themselves lured into a Russian oligarch’s plans to defect are soon positioned between the Russian Mafia and the British Secret Service, neither of whom they can trust.

July 8

The Secret Life of Pets: Directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney. Starring Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper and Jenny Slate. A dog’s life is turned upside down by the arrival of a new family pet, but the two will have to overcome their differences if they want to defeat an evil bunny and its army of orphaned animals.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: Directed by Jake Szymanski. Starring Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. Two brothers place an online ad to find dates for a wedding and the ad goes viral.

Captain Fantastic (Limited): Directed by Matt Ross. Starring Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella and Kathryn Hahn. In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.

Our Little Sister (Limited): Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. Starring Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa and Suzu Hirose. A story that revolves around three sisters who live in their grandmother’s home and the arrival of their 13-year-old half sister.

July 15

Ghostbusters: Directed by Paul Feig. Starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. 0 years after Ghostbusters took the world by storm, the beloved franchise makes its long-awaited return. Director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today.

The Infiltrator: Directed by Brad Furman. Starring Bryan Cranston, John Leguizamo and Diane Kruger. A U.S. Customs official uncovers a money laundering scheme involving Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Cafe SocietyDirected by Woody Allen. Starring Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Steve Carell. Set in the 1930s, a young Bronx native moves to Hollywood where he falls in love with the secretary of his powerful uncle, an agent to the stars. After returning to New York he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life.

Tulip Fever: Directed by Justin Chadwick. Starring Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan. An artist falls for a young married woman while he’s commissioned to paint her portrait during the tulip mania of 17th century Amsterdam.

Phantom Boy (Limited): Directed by Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol. Starring Edouard Baer, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Audrey Tautou. A super-powered boy helps a wheelchair-bound policeman in his attempt to bring down a mob kingpin.

July 22

Star Trek Beyond: Directed by Justin Lin. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. The USS Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Ice Age: Collision Course: Directed by Mike Thurmeier and Galen T. Chu. Starring John Leguizamo, Simon Pegg and Melissa Rauch. Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapults him outside of Earth, where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the planet. To save themselves from peril, Manny, Sid, Diego, and the rest of the herd leave their home and embark on a quest full of thrills and spills, highs and lows, laughter and adventure while traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters.

Lights Out: Directed by David F. Sandberg. Starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman and Billy Burke. A woman is haunted by a creature that only appears when the lights go out.

Don’t Think Twice (Limited): Directed by Mike Birbiglia. Starring Mike Birbiglia, Gillian Jacobs and Keegan-Michael Key. When a member of a popular New York City improv troupe gets a huge break, the rest of the group — all best friends — start to realize that not everyone is going to make it after all.

Into the Forest: Directed by Patricia Rozema. Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Ellen Page and Max Minghella. After a massive power outage, two sisters learn to survive on their own in their isolated woodland home.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie: Directed by Mandie Fletcher. Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley and Jon Hamm. Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamor, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hot-spots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more!

July 29

Jason Bourne: Directed by Paul Greengrass. Starring Matt Damon, Julia Stiles and Alicia Vikander. Jason Bourne, now remembering who he truly is, tries to uncover hidden truths about his past.

Bad Moms: Directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Starring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate and Kathryn Hahn. When three overworked and under-appreciated moms are pushed beyond their limits, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence.

Genius: Directed by Michael Grandage. Starring Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. A chronicle of Max Perkins’ time as the book editor at Scribner, where he oversaw works by Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others.

Equity (Limited): Directed by Meera Menon. Starring Anna Gunn, James Purefoy and Alysia Reiner. Equity, the first female-driven Wall Street film, follows a senior investment banker who is threatened by a financial scandal and must untangle a web of corruption.

Indignation (Limited): Directed by James Schamus. Staring Sarah Gadon, Logan Lerman and Ben Rosenfield. In 1951, Marcus, a working-class Jewish student from New Jersey, attends a small Ohio college, where he struggles with sexual repression and cultural disaffection, amid the ongoing Korean War.
