Paul Giamatti Heads to FX for 1980s Miami Detective Drama ‘Hoke’
Earlier this year we were surprised to learn that upcoming ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ star Paul Giamatti would take to TV again for a guest stint on ‘Downton Abbey,’ though it seems FX has in mind a longer stay for the Emmy-winning star. The cable network has officially ordered a pilot for 1985 Miami homicide drama ‘Hoke,’ featuring Giamatti in the title role of a mid-life crisis enduring detective.
The series is described as a darkly comedic drama drawing a base from author Charles Willeford’s novel series, ‘Sideswipe,’ ‘New Hope for the Dead’ and ‘The Way We Die Now.’ In addition to experiencing a mid-life crisis, Hoke Moseley doesn’t let his possible insanity stop him from nosing around hard-boiled murders in the Miami scene. ‘Hoke’ production will begin in Miami sometime later this year.
“Like Elmore Leonard, Charles Willeford is one of the most deeply respected writers of crime fiction and he created a wholly original and colorful lead character in Detective Hoke Mosely,” FX Networks original programming president Eric Schrier said in a statement. “Scott Frank delivered a magnificent script and we are honored that Paul Giamatti will bring Hoke to life. We’re grateful to Curtis Hanson, Carol Fenelon, Paul, and Dan Carey for bringing us this project.”
In addition to his starring role, Giamatti will serve as executive producer for ‘Hoke,’ while his company Touchy Feely Films maintains first-look deal with FX Productions signed in summer of last year. ‘Hoke’ is being produced in-house by FX Productions.
Well, what do we think? Would you watch Paul Giamatti in an 80’s detective drama on FX? Give us your hopes for “Hoke’ in the comments!
