Protests Erupt in Anaheim After Off-Duty Cop Fires Shot at Group of Teens [VIDEO]

Police arrested 24 people in Anaheim, Calif. after hundreds protested a recent run-in between an off-duty officer and a 13-year-old boy.

As ABC Eyewitness News reports, 10 men, 8 women and 6 juveniles were taken into custody on misdemeanor charges such as battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and failing to disperse.

On Tuesday (Feb. 21), the officer — who’s a member of LAPD — fired his weapon outside his home after he and the teen exchanged words. According to the officer, the 13-year-old threatened to shoot him, although a video of the incident doesn’t show that.

“In reality he was saying ‘I’m going to sue you. You keep hitting me. You’re hurting me. I’m going to sue you,'” said the teen’s mom. The report also states that the confrontation started after the officer accused several kids of cutting through his lawn. The 13 year-old boy’s father said he was trying to defend a girl who the officer called a “cunt” for stepping on his lawn.

As of now, the incident is being investigated, and the Anaheim Police Department’s Homicide Detail is looking into the shot being fired. Plus, the case will be set in front of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office at some point, but until then people will most likely continue to protest.

“An officer, even off-duty, has an obligation to follow the law and protect public safety, rather than threaten it,” said Jennifer Rojas of the ACLU of Southern California. “The LAPD officer’s actions on the video are grossly irresponsible.”
