Quentin Tarantino Almost Directed a Marvel Superhero Movie?

Quentin Tarantino
The Weinstein Co.

How would you like to see Quentin Tarantino direct a superhero movie? Before you pass out do to overload of geek whimsy, we’ll have to quickly inform you that it’s not happening, at least, not at the moment. But QT came surprisingly close to making one almost twenty years ago. Read what the director has to say about it after the break.

Out promoting a little movie called ‘Django Unchained’, Tarantino spoke with MTV about the unlikely comic-book adaptation that almost happened. You can watch the video below, or read the transcript right here:

After ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ I had considered doing a ‘Luke Cage, Hero for Hire’ movie. [Producer] Ed Pressman owned the rights at that time, and we talked about it… I talked to Larry Fish [Laurence Fishburne] about being Luke Cage, and he really liked that idea. Then I ended up writing ‘Pulp Fiction.’

Let it be noted that Tarantino calls Fishburne “Larry Fish” and is likely the only person who can do so and get away with it.

It may be difficult picturing Quentin directing a superhero film in the vein of ‘Spider-Man’ or ‘X-Men’, but Luke Cage makes all kinds of sense. We can absolutely picture Tarantino’s well-known love of Blaxploitation and 70s revenge thrillers coming in handy while telling the story of Carl Lucas, who gains superhuman powers while in prison only to use them for good on the outside as a vigilante for hire. Man, now that we’re thinking about it, we really want to see it!

At the moment, however, it doesn’t seem like a superhero movie is in Tarantino’s future; that is, not a superhero familiar to us. ”My feeling is if I wanted to do something like that, I’d want to create the superhero myself,” the man told MTV.

Now, what would an original superhero created by Tarantino look like?
