Bristol Palin, the daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, is engaged, and she has Rascal Flatts to thank. The trio gave Sgt. Dakota Meyer an assist as he dropped to a knee during one of their shows at the Joint inside Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel.

The 26-year-old Meyer is a Medal of Honor recipient, earned after braving enemy fire to recover three dozen American and Afghan troops in 2009. The couple met in Alaska last year when Meyer was visiting to film an episode of Amazing Alaska with Sarah Palin. The younger Palin describes the proposal at her blog, saying Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox dedicated “Bless the Broken Road” to them before her fiancé dropped to a knee.

“It’s amazing to see what happens when you place everything in life in God’s hands,” Bristol Palin writes. “He really is good and His plans are so much greater than our own.”

Sarah Palin posted several new photos on her Facebook page while revealing the steps Meyer took before proposing. The Marine flew to Alaksa to ask Bristol’s father, Todd, and grandfather, Chuck Sr., for their approval before proposing.

“He’s an American hero and patriot whose service to our country — like all his fellow Medal of Honor recipients — has been above and beyond the call of duty,” Sarah Palin writes, “but even more important is he's a good and kind man who loves Bristol and Tripp, and is loved by them.”

Tripp is Bristol’s 6-year-old son with ex-fiance Levi Johnston. Rascal Flatts have not commented on the event. Their initial run of dates in Las Vegas wrapped over the weekend.
