Ushering in the year of the rat in the Chinese culture has taken on a whole new meaning. Many Asian countries are finding that rat meat is in high demand and prices are starting to skyrocket, in many southeast Asian communities, the rare rat meat delicacies sell for more than six dollars a pound. Restaurants are now selling rat in many different Asian style dishes, but mostly rat is consumed fried or barbequed.

The real problem is that there aren’t enough rodents to satisfy the countries ferocious appetite, that local hunters are having to hunt day and night just to try and keep up with demand. The Chinese Health Ministry is now warning it’s people to be very careful in the consumption of rodents because they carry many diseases. Rats are being harvested by rat hunters mostly in the countries rice fields but at some corner markets the common everyday street rats end up on the dinner table.
