Steven Soderbergh‘s long-in-the-works Liberace bio-picture ‘Behind the Candelabra’ is starting to fill its ranks, and it looks like Rob Lowe and Scott Bakula will be joining a cast that already includes Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Debbie Reynolds and Dan Aykroyd.

Lowe would be playing Liberace’s plastic surgeon, while Bacula would be his choreographer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is being done for HBO, so it could run up to four hours, and it’s being written by Richard LaGravenese, who made a name for himself with ‘The Fisher King’ and ‘The Ref’ -though his more recent output hasn’t been as great.

Lowe has recently been amazing on ‘Parks and Recreations,’ and one wonders if this is a more comic role for the actor. Bakula is coming off a run on ‘Desperate Housewives,’ though is probably still best remembered for his roles in ‘Quantum Leap’ and ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’

This is turning into a great cast for the HBO movie, though it reflects that the network has become a home for great directors who can’t find funding in the Hollywood system for odd films. Though we doubt this will be done to the length of Todd Haynes’s excellent ‘Mildred Pierce,’ we can’t wait to see what Soderbergh tells us about the notoriously flamboyant musician and entertainer.
