I was watching the news today and saw a story about Soylent. Soylent is a powdered food substitute that was discovered by Rob Rhinehart. Rob complains he just doesn't have time to cook meals and eat, so he came up with this powdered substitute that he can just mix and drink.

Rob is not a nutritionist or biologist he is an electrical engineer by trade. He did all the research for this product on his own using the internet and books. What he has come up with is similar to a protein shake. There is protein, vitamins, nutrients and some other stuff that, he claims, makes it a substitute for food.

Rob says he hasn't completely given up food himself but he doesn't eat as much. This Soylent product will be cheaper, easier to store, nutritious, and well pretty much take the place of that delicious cheeseburger you currently enjoy.

He is currently in the process of informal testing and modification of the product but hopes to soon have the funds to afford the formal research to get his product on store shelves with FDA approval. He does plan a commercial version that should be available as early as September of this year but it won't have FDA approval. And yes, the name 'Soylent' is based on the '70s movie Soylent Green.

I'm not sure I like the idea of giving up food, especially if we have it readily available, as we do in the US. However, I can see that this might be something of benefit to those living in third world countries. A small amount of this powder, which seemingly would keep for an indefinite time, could be the cure for starvation. Or as some have pointed out, it would be perfect in the event of a Zombie Apocalypse. So if you are a 'prepper' you might want to check out Soylent for your bunker.

I personally think I'll stick to going to the grocery store for real food. I've never been a huge fan of milk/protein shakes. I like the taste of food and as long as I am able to chew and enjoy real food I will continue to do so, drinking my meals just doesn't sound satisfying.

What do think, is this product something you would try?
