Texans we are a proud people and we see ourselves as completely different from the rest of the world. It takes a full day to drive across the state and I'm not talking a day as in 8 hours I'm talking at least 24 hours! We have our little nuances that make us unique but sometimes the stereotypes that others have of us are completely wrong, not that we care, we just play it up even more so! So what are some stereotypes of Texans that aren't quite true?

So what are some stereotypes of Texans that aren't quite true?

We Don't All Wear Cowboy Hats
While we all like to play the part of “cowboy” at times we don't all wear cowboy hats. In fact I would say that more folks wear baseball caps or nothing at all. However, in the movies if the character is from Texas then they stick a cowboy had on them and give them a really bad southern drawl so no one mistakes them being from anywhere other than “Texas”.

We Don't Have Oil Wells in Our Backyard
While some people from Texas do live in the country and do, in fact, have oil wells on their property, the majority of Texans don't own an oil well. The Ewings of Dallas of course are the exception. Come to think of it J.R. also wears a cowboy hat….these people are blowing my whole theory here.

We Don't Have Horns on Our Car/Truck Hoods
We are not the ones that put horns on our cars and trucks people, that would be those folks in Hazzard County. I'm still not too clear on where Hazzard County is but it's not in Texas; but they sure did have some fine looking Duke boys that ran around that area causing all kinds of trouble. Anyway, while it is a mighty fine accessory for a vehicle it really isn't representative of Texas drivers.

We Don't All Own Ranches
Some people in Texas own land, but an actual ranch, not so much. Ranches are few and far between when you actually look at the population of the state. There are the King Ranch, 6666, YO and a scattered few around but we don't all own ranches. They are a lot of work, you have to start at the crack of dawn, if not before, and you don't finish until sunset or after, especially during birthing seasons. So, no, we don't all own ranches.

We Don't Ride Horses to Work
Now we don't currently ride horses to work, but that may soon become an option due to rising gas prices. A little grain and a little water is really all a horse needs. Maybe a nice shade tree to stand under when he's in “park” but fairly low maintenance otherwise. Why people think we do this is beyond me; do you know how long it would take to get to El Paso on a horse?
