Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers take fans down "On the Water" in their new video, and they're letting Taste of Country readers see it first.

Martin and the ace bluegrass band released a new project titled The Long-Awaited Album in September. According to a press release, The Long-Awaited Album "is a collection of 14 stunning new songs all co-written by Martin and produced by Grammy-winner Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt)." The album has reached No. 1 on Billboard's Bluegrass chart and includes "On the Water," a bluegrass instrumental track titled "Office Supplies" and a humorous song titled "Caroline," among others.

The Grammy-winning bluegrass act and Martin shot the video for "On the Water" at San Diego State University in August, playing it live and getting passersby to participate to capture the loose, fun feel of the song.

Martin first discovered his love of the banjo at age 17, and he returned to that love when he released his first album in 2010. He has since released more solo work and collaborated with Edie Brickell on Love Has Come for You, which won a Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song for its title track. Martin and Brickell's second collaboration, So Familiar, earned critical acclaim and inspired their Broadway musical Bright Star, which received five Tony Awards nominations.

Martin, of course, had a long and varied career as a comedian, actor, screenwriter and author before returning to his love of the banjo, and he couldn't resist a dry quip in describing the inspiration for "On the Water."

"I’ve spent many joyful hours in tropical climates with close friends," he tells Taste of Country. " I was trying to capture the joy of friendship, just like a beer ad."
