‘The Beguiled’ Trailer: Colin Farrell Receives Some Strange Southern Hospitality

Well, would you look at that. Sofia Coppola went and made a proper genre film — transforming her signature dreamy style into something vaguely insidious in the first trailer for The Beguiled. A remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film (based on the 1966 novel of the same name), Coppola’s latest stars Colin Farrell as a wounded Union soldier who takes refuge at a southern boarding school headed by Nicole Kidman. And then things…take a turn.

Coppola’s latest film appears to be more of a new adaptation of the Thomas Cullinan novel than a flat-out remake of the Don Siegel film; if you’re unfamiliar with both, then you’re in for a real treat. The Beguiled takes place in the Antebellum south, where the girls at a small boarding school take in a wounded Union soldier and discover that he may not be the enemy that he seems — but these proper ladies, including Coppola fave Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Angourie Rice, aren’t all that they seem, either.

EW debuted the first images from The Beguiled earlier this morning, along with an interview with Coppola, who says all the right things about her intriguing new film:

I haven’t really done a genre film. It was fun to figure out how to approach that but still [keep the film] in my style, and to have this kind of beautiful, dreamy world that I like — but with a plot! The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and then also the power shifts between men and women. So for me, it’s very universal, but it’s in this exotic setting of the Southern gentility.

I love how a southern setting is “exotic” to Coppola, but then again, it totally would be.

The Beguiled hits theaters on June 23.
