‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ Releases New Trailer in Time for Tolkien Week

The Hobbit‘ fans know that this week marks Tolkien Week, which is extra special do to it also being the 75th anniversary of ‘The Hobbit’s’ publication date and all. Plus, September 22 is “Hobbit Day,” the day in the book series of both Bilbo and Frodo’s birthdays. So, what better way to celebrate this extraordinary occasion than having Peter Jackson release a brand-new trailer for the much-anticipated ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘?

The first installment in the ‘Hobbit’ movie trilogy, hitting theaters this December 14, will presumably cover the events in the J.R.R. Tolkien’s pre-’Lord of the Rings’ novel from the time Bilbo leaves The Shire to the moment he and his dwarf pals escape their elven captives in empty barrels floating down a river — if all the promotional materials so far are to be taken at face value. While it sucks we have to wait till next year and the year after next to see the entire book imagined on the big screen, there are still plenty of scenes to which to look forward.

In the first trailer, we get to see snippets of Gollum, Gandalf and all the bumbling dwarfs. So far, all the more “exciting” scenes, if you will, we’ve only seen hinted at in movie stills and posters (Bilbo’s encounter with trolls, running from wolves, the spiders…). Did the new ‘Hobbit’ trailer fulfill our need for more action sequences? See for yourself in the trailer below.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ premieres December 14, 2012; ‘The Desolation of Smaug‘ December 13, 2013; and ‘There and Back Again‘ on July 18, 2014.
