The Season 14 Battle Rounds on The Voice resumed on Mar. 20, enlisting Blake Shelton, along with fellow coaches Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys (plus help from  celebrity mentors!) to ready their teams for battle—with two singers from each team going head to head. The winner of each battle moves on to the Knockouts round. The loser goes home, or can be stolen by another coach.

This particular evening belonged almost exclusively to pop, rock, and soul, with only one battle hitting the country meter. Alas, that particular battle was montaged—meaning we didn't get to hear anything from Shelton's deep-voiced, pragmatic mentor Trace Adkins. Nor did we get a lot of insight from Shelton. Bummer!

However, what we did see of Team Blake's Bransen Ireland vs. Jaron Strom was interesting. The two singers went to battle on "Head Over Boots" by Jon Pardi, a 2015 No. 1 hit with a definite old-school feel.

Ireland would be the expected winner in this particular match, being a Tennessee native who was a shoo-in for Shelton's team the minute he stepped on set (he won his slot on the team doing Don Williams' 1982 tune "Tulsa Time). Strom, on the other hand, auditioned with a rollicking, retro "This Magic Moment" by the Drifters, dressed in a leopard-print bomber. He clearly could handle an old-school vibe, but he didn't present a country front at all.

Both singers brought it for the Pardi song, and even Shelton admitted that Ireland was the more obvious choice. But, as he said, Strom "has the ability to step up to the plate, and I appreciate that."

Although Tuesday was light on country, there will definitely be more in store. We'll be keeping an eye on Season 14's doings every Monday and Tuesday, so be sure to check in each week.
