1889: Pioneering female journalist Nellie Bly—aka Elizabeth Cochrane—begins a successful attempt to travel around the world in fewer than 80 days, completing the trip in 72 days (more info)

1915: Booker T. Washington, one of the last black American leaders born in slavery, dies at the age of 59 (more info)

1970: A chartered jet carrying most of the Marshall University football team crashes into a hillside, killing 37 players, the team’s coach, its doctors, the university athletic director and 25 team boosters (more info)

2002: Nancy Pelosi of California becomes the first woman to lead a party in Congress (more info)
