Thomas Rhett's "Marry Me" music video is just as heartbreaking -- and just as sweet -- as the song's lyrics suggest. Readers can press play above to watch the new clip.

Directed by TK McKamy and shot in Birmingham, Ala., and Nashville, Rhett's "Marry Me" music video follows a pair of childhood friends: They've known each other since they were both little kids, her putting together her dream wedding, dressed up in a tutu and her mom's high heels, and him peering through her window. The two are close friends in high school, and one night at a diner, they almost kiss -- but it doesn't happen.

As the "Marry Me" video progresses, that little girl -- now grown up -- gets engaged and prepares to walk down the aisle. Her childhood friend, now a young man, is there for it all, but he's clearly regretting not telling her how he feels. The clip will likely make its viewers a little teary-eyed -- but there's a surprising, and hope-filled, twist at the very end.

Written by Rhett, Jesse Frasure, Ashley Gorley, Shane McAnally, "Marry Me" finds the singer wondering "what if": What if he never worked up the courage to tell his now-wife Lauren how he felt and had to see her marry someone else?

“If I had not ever gone up and told Lauren how I felt about her, I would definitely have already been invited to her wedding,” Rhett says. “And so this song is kind of like that 'What if I had never said anything?'"

"Marry Me" appears on Rhett's most recent album, Life Changes. He released the project, his third studio album, in September.
