Things To Do In Abilene on Memorial Day
First and foremost, Memorial Day is a day where we remember those that sacrificed their own lives to keep America safe and free. But, it’s also a day for families and friends to gather together to fire up the grill and spend some time together. If you’re looking for things to do in Abilene on Memorial Day, here are some things you can do.
Honor The Fallen
This day is for remembering those that have gave their lives so that our lives are safer and better. In honor of that, visit a fallen soldiers resting place. If you have a family member or friend that served and died for our country, raise a flag in honor of them. Another way to honor the falling is attending the Memorial Day ceremony. Texas State Veterans Cemetery and Dyess Air Force base typically will have ceremonies that the public can attend. Whatever you do, make sure that you stop and reflect on the real reason we have Memorial Day.
BBQ at Your House
Sometimes the simplest things, like staying home, can be fun if you do it right. Your neighbors may disagree, but, having a Memorial Day party at your house can not only be fun, but inexpensive and safe as well. You don’t have to worry about traveling anywhere, you’re in the comfort of your own home, you can have a few beverages and not have worry about getting back home. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the hustle and bustle of crowded places. If you have a lot of kids coming over, rent an air castle or put a Slip ‘N Slide in the yard if it’s hot outside. So throw some meat on the grill, and fill the cooler up with some beverages for one heck of a Memorial Day party.
Go To A Park
Abilene has 27 parks that cover over 1,000 acres in Abilene, so you have a plethora of parks to choose from. One of my favorite parks is Nelson Park where they have Festival Gardens. Festival Gardens is a facility that you can rent that will hold up to 160 people with kitchen facilities, volleyball, horseshoes, large BBQ grill and more . So, if you have a lot of family and friends coming over, that is definitely a cool place to reserve. But, any park you pick is a good one because it gets you outdoors. Plus, the kids will love it. Also, don’t forget about the Abilene State Park. For locations of the parks in our area, check out the links below.
Go Out To The Lake
There are several lakes in and around Abilene including the historic Lake Fort Phantom. Abilene has two other lakes besides Lake Fort Phantom including Lake Kirby, which has excellent fishing, and Lake Abilene which is at the Abilene State Park. Lake Abilene offers scenic camping, hiking, nature study and more. There are several other lakes around Abilene that are awesome, as well, including Possum Kingdom Lake and Hubbard Creek Resevoir. So grab some camping gear, the grill and your family and friends and find a lake and chill out this Memorial Day weekend.
Visit Fort Griffin
Fort Griffin State Historic Site is not actually in Abilene, however, it’s only a short 40 mile drive northeast of Abilene and is definitely a place the whole family can check out with slew of activities to last the entire summer. So, if you’re wanting to shake things up a little bit and do something different this Memorial Day, check out Fort Griffin’s website and Facebook page with the links below.
