It’s the 4th of July and there are a lot of history shows on television today. I started with the “John Adams” mini-series on HBO now I’m onto “America: The Story of Us” on the History Channel. I’ve realized how little history I really know.

I have to admit history was one subject in school that I didn’t care for at all. I didn’t like math either, but it was an interesting challenge, history on the other hand just put me to sleep. I wish now that I had paid more attention.

My boyfriend can sit and watch these shows and he knows all the facts before they tell them. I’m amazed at how much of that is in his head. He made a good point with me that if we don’t know our history then we are doomed to repeat it, we should learn our lessons from our past mistakes.

I’m talking our early history, not just the past few decades. How we became a nation in the first place and what went into writing the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. I don’t know what one thing led to another and it makes me sad now that I didn’t learn this when I was younger, I feel like a bad American. When it comes to knowing history, I feel like those stupid people Jay Leno talks too on “Jay Walk”. So on this 4th of July, 2012 I am making myself a promise to learn history. Instead of reading just “fluff” books, I will read books about our history as a nation as well.

If you are older like me I ask that you join me in learning about what made us who we are; if you are young and still in school, then I encourage you to listen and learn in class. We need to know where we came from to understand where we are going.

I hope you all have had a wonderful holiday, it’s time to go watch the fireworks!! Happy Birthday America!
